The Best Way to Buy a Car or Truck in 2026

Car buying remains the most expensive, adversarial, confusing and too often, unfair consumer purchase experience of all time. Profit margin compression by manufacturers has reduced dealer new car profits, and increased price transparency for new and used has lowered margins even more. Not surprisingly, research continues to show that consumers would like tools to help them make the best decision. Why? Dealerships are designed like casinos, the longer you sit at their tables the more you pay and the more the house makes.

If you walk into a dealership to shop, test drive and negotiate the most complex transaction most people will ever make, you’ll likely pay $500 to $5,000 too much. Dealers sell cars & trucks 364 days a year, and you buy one once every 3-5-7 years? How can this happen so frequently? Two reasons: (1) they have a huge home field advantage- they dictate all aspects of the transaction, and (2) you have no advocate to protect your interests. If you bought a $30,000 or $50,000 piece of property (the avg. price of a used and new vehicle in 2026) you’d have two advocates. A realtor to help you negotiate a fair price and insure there are no problems associated with the property and a Title Company or Real Estate attorney to make sure all funds are properly accounted for and paperwork properly filed. When it comes to car buying all you get is a “Buyer Beware” warning. Worse, you don’t realize “free online information” is paid for and approved by auto, lender, and insurer advertisers to turn you into a lead for dealers. Nobody wants to be a lead.

There is a best way to buy or lease a new or used vehicle. It’s how auto industry professionals always do it. First, they negotiate remotely and in a linear fashion. Get an out the door (OTD) price that includes all taxes and fees. The total amount a consumer would write a check if they paid cash. Then they address financing, with 1 or 2 preapprovals for their specific vehicle and amount to finance so they can assess if the dealer can meet or beat their offer(s). Now they can do the same for a trade-in- get two offers for the trade (start with Carvana) and see if they can meet or beat your offer(s) here. Note: some states charge sales tax on the trade difference rather than the selling price. Check with you DMV as trading a $20,000 vehicle could save you the sales tax. At 7% that’s $1,400 in savings. Lastly, do your research on aftermarket products like extended service agreements, GAP (guaranteed asset protection) coverage, maintenance plans (check with your auto insurer for GAP coverage when you get an insurance quote on your new ride), etc. Most importantly, do not accept anything less then complete line item detail anytime they share a price. If all you get is $40,000 OTD and $800/mo…they’re hiding something. What comprises the $40,000 total? What fees are they charging you? What’s the term of the loan? Interest rate? Dealers bundle to hide extra cost and get you to pay more. Full stop! Demand detail or ghost them.

The other way dealers overcharge is through their use of digital documents. While dealers tell you they have improved transparency, because they pay vendors for digital document systems, they influence what and where you do and don’t see key details of your deal. Then add the fact that once you choose your digital signature we all tend to click faster than slower…missing too much along the way. If you take away nothing else from reading this blog and walk into a dealership and spend 3-6 hours to finish a deal, do not sign any electronic doc until you’ve reviewed a hard copy you can hold in your hand. Otherwise you will most likely be overcharged by thousands. This also applies if you buy a vehicle from an online dealer like Carvana- print your deal in hard copy paper and review it line by line. It will save you money!
